Recycling

The City of North Richland Hills encourages all residents to practice the 3Rs:

  • Reduce the amount of trash you discard.
  • Reuse containers and products, and give unwanted items to someone who can reuse them.
  • Recycle as much as possible, which includes buying products with recycled content.

Following are the many recycling programs that are available in our community:

Batteries
Rechargeable batteries commonly found in cordless power tools, cellular and cordless phones, laptop computers, camcorders, digital cameras, remote control toys should not be thrown in the trash. The following stores accept these types of batteries: Both Home Depot locations (6505 Northeast Loop 820 and 6411 Precinct Line Road) and Batteries Plus at 5041 Davis Boulevard. Automotive batteries will be accepted when you purchase a new battery. Batteries Plus will also accept auto and boat batteries.

Christmas Tree Recycling
Each year the City of North Richland Hills partners with Duncan Disposal to provide opportunities for residents to recycle their Christmas Trees. Please call 817-427-6651 for more details.

Clothing, Toys, Household Goods, Etc.
Practice "reuse" by donating gently used items. Goodwill, the Salvation Army and other charities accept these items. The local Goodwill drop off is located at 7201 Rufe Snow Drive. You may call the Salvation Army for pick up at 817-834-6271 for large bulky items.

Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) Bulbs
Ever since CFLs became popular, there's been concern regarding disposal of the bulbs. Home Depot has launched a national CFL bulb recycling program. At every Home Depot store, customers can bring in any expired, unbroken CFL bulbs and give them to the store associate behind the returns desk. The bulbs will then be recycled in an environmentally responsible manner. Learn about Home Depot's Eco Options program.

Compost Demonstration Garden
Another form of recycling is composting. Composting is nature's way of recycling organic waste into new soil, which can be used in vegetable and flower gardens, landscaping, and many other applications. In 1997 a compost demonstration garden was created at the NRH Neighborhood Services office at 7200 C Dick Fisher Dr. S. This garden was funded by a grant from the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission. The garden was created as an educational center for learning about composting, vericomposting, wildflowers, water ponds, native plants, trees, mulch, water conservation and xeriscaping. The garden is full of native plants, as well as perennials, annuals, and herbs that are well adapted to our area. Also available is information on water conservation in the landscape. For more information, please contact Environmental Resources at 817-427-6651.

Computers, Printers, Televisions, Cell Phones, Electronics
Goodwill Industries accepts working and non-working electronic equipment. This program uses recycled parts to help provide computers to those who may not otherwise have access to the most current technologies. Broken screens on monitors or televisions will not be accepted. The local Goodwill drop off is located at 7201 Rufe Snow Drive.

Paws to Recycle Program
The Paws to Recycle Program is a way for residents to support the North Richland Hills Animal Adoption & Rescue Center and be environmentally responsible. Through this program, residents can donate newspaper and aluminum cans to the center. The newspaper will be reused to line the animal cages or shredded for bedding. The cans will be cashed in at a recycling center with the proceeds used to further the programs at the Animal Adoption & Rescue Center. Residents may also drop off newspaper, magazines, office paper, junk mail, catalogs and colored paper in the Abitibi bins located in the Wal-Mart parking lots on N.E. Loop 820 and North Tarrant Parkway . (Please no phone books, cardboard, trash, metal or glass.) The Animal Adoption & Rescue Center will be paid for the paper collected in these bins and the paper will be recycled. For more information on ways you can support the Animal Adoption & Rescue Center, please call 817-427- 6570.
