[ARCHIVED] Trail System Improvements

Cotton Belt Trail

North Richland Hills Parks & Recreation has received $576,217 federal grant funding to make improvements to the city’s trail system, including multiple crosswalk improvements, sidewalk improvements, pavement markings and emergency location signage. The work will begin this month and should be completed in May 2022.  Projects include:

Cotton Belt Trail

  • A new crosswalk and new pedestrian signals on the north side of the Precinct Line Road and Glade Road intersection.

JoAnn Johnson Trail

  • Installation of rapid flashing beacons at the Rufe Snow Drive crossing.

John Barfield Trail

  • Installation of rapid flashing beacons at the Rumfield Road crossing and the Kirk Lane crossing.

Calloway Branch Trail

  • New pedestrian ramps, crosswalks and pedestrian signals at the intersection of Mid Cities Boulevard and Iron Horse Boulevard.
  • New sidewalks on Iron Horse Boulevard from the Cotton Belt Trail north to Mid Cities Boulevard.
  • Widening of the sidewalk on the north side of Mid Cities Boulevard from Iron Horse Boulevard to Buckingham Trail.
  • New crosswalk striping and signage on Bursey Road at Londonderry / Valley Drive to establish the presence of bicyclists and pedestrians.
  • Installation of new shared pavement markings and bicycle route signs to create an on-road bicycle-friendly route from Mid Cities Boulevard to Richfield Park, from Richfield Park to Cross Timbers Park, and from Cross Timbers Park to the John Barfield Trail western terminus.

All Trails

Installation of 911 emergency location signage every ¼ mile on all off-road trails in North Richland Hills.

The trail system improvements were selected based on the federal program criteria and available budget. The city will be reimbursed 80% of the costs of these improvements, up to $576,217, by the Texas Department of Transportation with funding from the Federal Highway Administration’s Transportation Alternatives Set-Aside Program.  If you would like more information about these projects, please email NRH Parks & Recreation or call 817-427-6620.
